social clubs

I’ve always been interested in the way that informal social clubs form around activities that are done in public, drawing in observers, who then become participants. Like them I’d stop, watch and if possible join in and where appropriate/with permission I’d photograph these activities. Sometimes these activities are principally about the activity: board games, boules, darts which could take place in several locations, other activities are firmly located in place. the following photographs are some examples of this

Outdoor Swimmers at Clevedon Marine Lake: I visit this lake regularly, swimmers come here all year round, and have formed a variety of groupings, meeting on regular days to encourage each other in

Retired Gentlemen’s Atheletic Club, Barcelona: I noticed this club while staying in Barcelona, the gentlement invited me to pass time with them. The raquet game was going on while other members sat playing dominoes, backgammon or just chatting at nearby tables, this ‘clubhouse’ being on the promenade encouraged members of the public to stop by and join in.

Pool Club, Laguna, Belize: access to this small town is by boat, then through the bar where these young men meet every evening
