the car goes nowhere

I spent a month in Havana, there was a fuel crisis, people tended their cars lovingly but rarely started the engines, sometimes they’d help each other push them into a new position, these cars would become the focus for social activity.

As I spent more time in the city I realised how many more social opportunities were offered by the absence of car traffic, I found it easy to meet people who were generally curious, friendly and happy for me to record their activities. When I returned from this trip I had a large portfolio of photographs that became an exhibition called ‘The Car Goes Nowhere’, a selection of these is here
